SARONIC ISLANDS

The Saronic islands are very popular Greek islands for summer holidays and weekend breaks. This is because there are the closest Greek islands from Athens. Aegina, Poros, Hydra and Spetses have developed a lot in tourism over the last years, while Agistri is not that famous but remains a true gem to explore. The crystal water, the relaxing atmosphere and the long history are the most distinctive characteristics of  Saronic Greece, which have a different character each. Poros is great for sailing, Hydra has amazing architecture, Spetses stands out for the elegant mansions and Aegina is ideal for family vacations.

Aegina is a lovely island in close distance to Athens. This is why it gets very popular as a weekend destination for the Athenians. A place with rich history, Aegina island was a great naval power in the ancient times and a capital of Greece for a short time in 1828. The most popular tourist places is Agia Marina, Souvala and Marathon with relaxing beaches, while very nice is also the seaside village of Perdika. The Town, with the elegant Neoclassical buildings, is a lovely place to stroll along the port promenade and the narrow streets. The most important sight in Aegina Greece is the Ancient Temple of Athena Aphaia, constructed in the 6th century BC. This island is also famous for the large production of pistachios. Hydra, built in the shape of an amphitheatre on a slope overlooking the Argosaronic gulf, is one of the most romantic destinations in Greece. Traditional stone mansions, narrow cobblestoned streets, secluded squares and above all the banning of cars and the use of around 500 donkeys as means of public transportation, explain the reason why Hydra preserved its distinctive atmosphere through the passage of time.

Salamis or Salamina is the island of the historical ancient sea battle where the Greek ships destroyed the Persian Armada of King Darius in C5th BC. It is also the hometown of the famous Greek hero Ajax and also Euripides. Salamina has many archaeological sites and monasteries worth visiting.

The quickest way to get to Salamina is by going to Perama, a suburb of Piraeus, and cross the one mile of sea by the small ferry boat service that is frequent (every 10  minutes). due to its vicinity with the capital of Greece most of its inhabitants work in Athens and Piraeus, as an example, someone that work in Piraeus needs only 20 minutes to go by car to Salamis.
